What to consider when choosing your thermal imaging optics

Detection Range

Maximum distance at which the camera can detect a heat source under specified conditions

Thermal Sensitivity (NETD)

Detects the smallest temperature differences. A lower NETD value indicates higher sensitivity and better detection of subtle temperature variations.

Pixel Pitch

The distance between pixels on the thermal sensor, measured in micrometres (µm). Smaller pixel pitch can improve image detail.

Thermal Sensor

The sensor that detects infrared radiation and converts it into a thermal image, revealing temperature differences in the scene.

Angular Field of View

The width of the scene visible through the camera, measured in degrees. A wider angle captures more of the surrounding area

Lens Diameter

A larger lens diameter can help detect targets at greater distances.

Magnification

Indicates how much closer a target appears compared to viewing it with the naked eye.

Eye Relief

The maximum distance your eye can be from the eyepiece while still seeing the full field of view. Longer eye relief is ideal for glasses wearers.
