Useful reference guide

The book was the chosen free gift with a pair of Avalon binoculars. My sister who received both for her birthday was delighted. She is using it to confirm the birds she sees in her garden. Latest spot was a grey wagtail!

A bit of a brick but.....

If you want a comprehensive and modern book (rather than rely on a device or my 40 year old Collins' Gem guide) then this could be right for you. The photos are clear and helpful, there's lots of habitat advice, and tips on how to tell different species apart, plus good tips on how to tell genders apart - we 'sexed' a kestrel on the book's first outing and also what I thought was a Tawny Owl was in fact a Long Eared Owl which was a nice surprise as it's the first one I have knowingly seen in the wild. Downside - size/weight a wee bit but most of my outdoor gear pockets can cope with an OS map so this book isn't that big folks. I liked it a lot as a practised birder, and my other half who is totally new to it all found it useful and easy to navigate too.

useful

my only criticisms are 1. the maps are a bit small. 2.a bit of a squeeze into pockets. Other than that it gives me all I need
