Close Focus

Generally, for birdwatching, 3 metres isn’t an issue, but if you’re likely to use your binoculars to look at insects dragonflies and butterflies, for example) or to get a closer look at inaccessible wildflowers on the far side of a ditch or fence, then close-focus could be more important for you.

Eye Relief

The eye-relief of an optical instrument refers to the maximum distance behind the eyepiece that a user can place his or her eye and still see the full extent of the field of view.

If you wear glasses, pay particular attention to the eye relief quoted in a binocular’s specs. Eye relief measurements of 16mm should work well for most eyeglass wearers; however, some may find they require an eye relief of up to 18 mm or even more to experience the full field of view.

Fog Proof

It’s important to ensure your binoculars have been purged with an inert gas usually nitrogen but occasionally argon) at the factory. This drives out the air (and the water vapour it contains), eliminating the risk of internal condensation/fogging as your move between dramatically different temperatures (from a warm car, for example, to a freezing lakeshore, or vice versa).

Field of View

A wider field of view makes it easier to scan large open areas quickly, and makes it much easier to find and follow fast, erratically moving subjects like small birds. Higher magnification reduces the field of view.

Lens Diameter

Larger objective lenses let more light into the optical system… so binoculars with larger objective lenses have the potential to deliver a brighter image at the eyepiece than those with smaller objectives. There’s a caveat though: as you increase the size of the objective lenses binoculars become steadily bulkier, heavier and more expensive.

In practice, for a binocular you want to carry with you and use in the field, the useful range of objective lens sizes is from 30mm-50mm, 42mm being the most popular.

A quick indication of brightness can be gained by dividing the diameter of the objective lens by the magnification.

For example, an 8x42 binocular would have a brightness value of 5.25 (42 divided by 8).

Magnification

Every binocular has two numbers printed somewhere on the instrument (10x42, 8x32, etc.) -- the first of these numbers (before the x) signifies how much the binoculars will magnify the view you’re looking at.

While higher magnifications will bring your subject closer, they will also reduce image brightness, decrease depth of focus, reduce your field of view and accentuate hand shake and atmospheric aberrations. The sweet spot for birdwatching and wildlife watching, is 8x or 10x magnification.

Waterproof

Binoculars for birding have to be able to cope with whatever the weather can throw at them. Make sure the binoculars you choose are waterproof and fully sealed. As well as protecting against rain, or accidental immersion, this will also mean your binoculars are impervious to dust and other airborne contaminants.

Weight and Size

The weight of a pair of binoculars will, of course, depend on its size, but also on the type of housing/body material used in its construction, and the quality of the optical components it contains. Magnesium alloy is the strongest, lightest and most expensive material currently used for binocular housings.

HD/ED glass

Images viewed through binoculars that use HD or ED elements in their optical system tend to appear crisper, more defined and have more accurate colour fidelity across the spectrum -- resulting in a more natural, realistic image.

ED glass produces a sharper and clearer image than HD glass. ED glass is short for Extra-low dispersion glass. It significantly reduces chromatic aberration while improving colour reproduction.

Wow, incredible!

Well..I think the title says it all really!
So I've tried a bunch of binoculars in 90s and a couple in more previous years, one being not that long ago, it was the Hawke frontier APO (I think they were called)..£700 binoculars anyway, and I saw these advertised the scenic pro ED..I was a bit skeptical at first..but decided to bite the bullet and buy them anyway after pondering awhile about it.
Well first of all I'm a wildlife photographer, but love bird watching equally as much so I wanted some binoculars to help identify some birds that was a bit too far away, but I wanted them sharp/clear at the same time..I heard these do just that!..well they're not wrong! I tested them out today, both long range and at distance!
The image is super sharp ,colour accurate, the weight is really nice, far from heavy or cumbersome, very well balanced!
The eye cups are great, not uncomfortable in the slightest, the focus ring is incredibly smooth too.
The neck strap..wow that is nice and soft, doesn't rub..it feels premium as do the binoculars!
It comes with a very nice carry bag with a front pocket for your clothes.. bit of extra room in there too, so I'd probably put some camera cfexpress cards in there and a battery or two.
Packaging was very good really durable tube style bubble wrap.
The box itself is well built, very durable too so no chance that will crush in transit..unless someone jumped on it!
I highly recommend these binoculars, I personally would say they're better than the hawke frontier..what pushes me to say that..the PRICE! I genuinely can't tell the difference between the two..seriously!
Want your arm twisting a little bit more? LIFETIME WARRANTY!
you can't go wrong with these!

Amazing product, a must buy!

This is the first pair of binoculars that I’ve bought in a 10 years and need for birdwatching and spotting wildlife for photography. After a lot of research and after speaking to a number of friends, it led to be purchasing The Natureray scenic pro ED8×42. There were bust build, lightweight and superb image quality as well as their lifetime warranty made it a no brainer. I’ve used these binoculars on a number of occasions and they continue to impress me.

Superb Upgrade

After researching ethical binoculars at a medium price point, I decided to order these. My long serving, inferior pair were a gift nearly 20 years ago, and having really got into wildlife watching recently, and birding in particular, felt it was time I could justify an upgrade. The clarity and variable focal depth are amazing. Debut outing was actually to see the rare Snake's Head Fritillaries that grow abundantly at a Wiltshire Wildlife Trust nature reserve. They looked like jewels en masse in the sunshine viewed from afar thanks to the ED crispness, and up close, using the near focal capability of 1.5m, the flowerhead detail really stood out. Looking forward to using this feature to view stationary butterflies and dragonflies. The focal wheel is smooth, the eye relief cups ideal with my glasses, the neck strap is soft and comfortable, and while the binoculars are actually slightly heavier then my previous pair, they are smaller and easy to hold. The carrying case is nice and compact and the packaging is smart. They also arrived quickly via DPD.

Excellent Service & Binoculars

Ordered my binoculars on a Wednesday afternoon and they arrived on the Friday morning. As they are a Christmas present for my wife they haven't had a lot of use but I looked inside the box and everything is as described. I have used then briefly and they are a huge improvement on our ancient Leica pair. Would thoroughly recommend Stealth Birding.

Great binoculars

These binoculars are a great step up from my previous ones. Images are bright and clear. The focusing ring is so smooth too. James from Stealth Birding was most helpful when I corresponded with him via Email. Definitely recommended.
